What is the tacking noise I hear by the fuse box of car?

The sound will go away when I press on the brakes. So, right now I have the key in the ignition so that it will stop making the sound until my husband gets home after canoe paddling practice. Let me know what that sound may be and hopefully the problem is that my battery is dead.
