We’re all used to the concept of a pay as you go mobile phone, but now there is the option to apply the same principle to your car insurance. This latest type of insurance is a step to cut costs for younger drivers.
While it won’t bring the premiums of a 19 year old down to the level of a 40 year old, it will help secure a substantial saving on their policy. Insurers are recognising that although drivers under 25 have a higher percentage of road accidents, not all drivers in this age group are unsafe or reckless.
Therefore, a driver in the high-risk age group can opt for a ‘black box’ – similar in principle to the ones used in aircraft – fitted to their car. This sends details of journeys to the driver’s car insurance company, who can then work out the costs per mile. During the day, driving is relatively low-cost, starting from 5p per mile, in quiet times. During rush hour the cost per mile will raise, and the highest cost comes between the hours of 11pm and 6am, when the fee is a flat £1 per mile.
The aim of this is to prevent young drivers from using their cars late at night, which is when most accidents tend to happen. There is a fee for fitting the box, but for a young, safe driver the benefit of cheap car insurance will compensate for this. The average saving this type of premium can give is around 30 - 40%. To an age group traditionally quoted in the region of £2000 per year for insurance, that’s an amount not to be scoffed at.
Of course, if you don’t like the idea of a black box tracking your every move, you can always opt for taking a Pass Plus course, which can give you a similar discount. If you’ve already taken one of these courses, mention it next time you apply for a car insurance quote and you may be surprised at the difference.

Smith James asked:
The insurance companies in UK have come up with different car insurance plans for different categories of drivers on the English streets. There are 2 main ideas behind having different plans for different kinds of drivers - one, every category of drivers have a style of driving common to the category; and second, they usually drive a particular type of car. Let me illustrate the two points.
Every category of drivers have a style typical to all or most of the drivers in that segment. For example, young men usually display their need for speed. At the same time they are cautious about bumping into other vehicles on the road. Most of the people in the same age bracket would display similar driving styles and that is why the kind of accidents they meet with are usually similar in nature.
Now, let us come to the second reason - similar cars. Men and women, who are working executives in different organisations, are also people with family. Therefore they would drive family cars. The family cars can be further divided into the small cars and the 3 box cars. Then we also take the age factor in it, as discussed in the point above. Young adults have a particular style, while more mature people display a different one.
All these factors are taken into consideration for the simple reason that the kind of accidents they meet are of different nature. And therefore the need for insurance also varies. The benefits each of them would want to derive from their car insurance plan are different from one another. Hence, the plans should be so designed so that there is a plan for every category of drivers.
The best way to find out which car insurance plan suit you the best, is by looking them up in a good comparison web site. There are quite a few good and unbiased insurance comparison sites available through World Wide Web. You can search them and select one that suits you and your car.

Andy Adams asked:
Many of us dog owners grow tired of walking Fido round to the local shops, and if he could talk then he’d probably tell you he feels the same. The best place to let your dog stretch their legs is when going out for a country walk or a day at the beach. This would mean packing them in the family car and driving somewhere different.
Driving with pets in the car whether it’s for a trip to the beach or even a mundane trip to the vets it can be a traumatic time for some pets and so you should make sure that they are secured and safe for the journey. You often see in movies and TV shows people driving along with the passenger window open and their dog’s head popping out, I know my dog loves it, must like the wind in his hair!
The problem with this is that in the event of an accident then there’s a good chance that your pet is likely to get injured, much more likely than yourself due to car seats and seatbelts not being made for dogs and cats. This is also likely to be a key factor with any relation to your car insurance, after all a hyperactive dog leaping around your car is bound to distract you and could mean you end up with liability in the event of a crash.
So how can you make sure that you and your pet travel safely? The good news is that there are many products and solutions to stow your pet in your car safely and securely. It’s such a deal breaker for some car owners that some manufacturers are including cages and other options with their cars. Common solutions are the aforementioned cages in the boot mostly found in estate vehicles and minivans for dogs and carry boxes for cats and other smaller animals. These boxes need to be secured too, if the box can fit in the rear foot wells then this is a good place for smaller animals, other wise putting the box on a back seat with the seatbelt around it and trying to wedge it some how between the front seats and the back is a good way to secure carry cases.
There are of course many other inventions that help secure pets during travel such as hammocks and sleeping bag like devices, no matter how weird and wacky these devices are it is still a very serious subject as travelling at 30mph a 60 pound dog can cause an impact of 1,200 pounds. Some car insurance companies offer extended cover for pets, although this is not typically covered as standard, so if you find you travel with your pet a lot, especially on long trips such as going on holidays or for a walk in the country then make sure that your car insurance company know of it, when you are next up for renewal then check with your current provider or check other car insurance quotes to see if they add protection for your pet, in some cases they insure you an extra £500 for pets who travel with you.
So take car eon the road and even though they love sticking their head out the window I’m sure your dog won’t mind waiting during the trip, just make sure you let him run around a bit longer when you get to your destination as a reward for his patience!
