What causes race cars to make a “chirping” type noise?
Filed Under Maintenance & Repairs | Leave a Comment
Hill asked:
I recently started going back to the (drag) race track and noticed that sometimes when cars come to the burn out box you can hear this “chirping” sound. It doesn’t sound bad, but I’m just curious as to why they make the noise. To be more specific, I’m talking about racing engines (big block chevy’s), not your everyday street cars. When I first posted this question I received answers addressing the belt, but I don’t think that’s what it is. However, I may stand corrected.

Today, many toy car collectors do not consider their collection to be complete unless they have included vintage toy cars. A toy car collection does not need to have a car that would represent every era, every sector, and every type of produced car there is. You may be interested only on Formula One race cars, or your collection may just be on a certain car manufacturer, for example 3000 GT Spyder, in this case, this is all about starting a collection of vintage toy cars.
When you start your vintage toy car collection, you may be shocked to find out that there are thousands of other collectors out there that share your same interests. This is actually a good indication as these other people may be able to help you out in times of need. You will be able to get a lot of information about collecting vintage toy cars from them as this is not an uncommon hobby.
Since you have already decided that your toy car collection would be on vintage cars, you now have to decide how much you can afford to start your collection. Remember, you don’t have to go for the rarest and most expensive pieces. Starting a collection with new vintage car toys is well enough, with proper care, such as taking good care of their boxes, these pieces can be very valuable in the future.
Try to visit some of the garage sales being done in or around your area. Many gems relating to rare vintage toy cars have been discovered in these sales. Try also to go to collectible shops, establish a reputation as a collector as this will get you into the vintage toy car inner circles. If other collectors know that you are a collector as well, you will be able to establish connections and get valuable information. Sooner or later, people will be contacting you about their finds and this will help ease the burden in looking for vintage car collectibles.
Online auction sites are also good sources for finding vintage toy cars. Many say that they were able to find great bargains in popular auction sites. Establishing a reputation as a vintage toy car collector in these auction sites will allow the sellers to directly contact you when they have pieces to sell.
You also need to establish a good reputation by having a high level of integrity as your word would be used to judge whether other collectors should trust your jugdment or not on vintage toy cars. Once it is established that you an authority on vintage toy cars, you can be certain that other collectors will take you seriously.
It is important that you should do a good research first and have vast knowledge about the history of vintage toy cars. This will hugely help you in determining if the price of the vintage toy car is right. Know about the history of toy cars and the materials used and their manufacturers so you can have proper assessment of their value.
Also, have a proper place where you can store your collection. A good display case will be able to protect your vintage toy car collection from the elements and still allow it to be viewed. Make sure to have a list of all your pieces in your collection and record their characteristics as well, this will be important especially if you want to sell your collection later on.

Preview on Carl Skerlong and the Upcoming Champ Car Atlantic Championship
Filed Under Automotive | Leave a Comment
Kraig Johanssen asked:
After a six week layoff, the 2007 Cooper Tires presents the Champ Car Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda the leading producer of Mazda oxygen sensor. The Champ Car Atlantic Championship is scheduled this coming weekend, Friday, June 8 to June 10, Sunday with Rounds 4 and 5 hosted at the Portland International Raceway (PIR), Portland, Oregon.
Seattle’s Carl Skerlong, 18 years of age and driver of the #24 King Taco/US RaceTronics entry is thrilled especially that the first two double-header meetings on the 12-round schedule is being hosted at the 1.964-mile permanent road course in Portland. The reigning Formula TR Pro Series 2000 Champion, the leading American-born rookie in the Champ Car Atlantic Championship, regards the PIR track as his “home” since he has won there on numerous occasions throughout his budding open-wheel racing career.
The SCCA 47th Annual Rose Cup race meeting has hosted Skerlong’s most recent victories at the Portland track. After having scored a National and Regional victory at the same event a year ago while driving a Formula Mazda Racer, Skerlong returned this year with an even more powerful steed the Formula Atlantic Swift 014, the predecessor to the 300bhp Swift 016 Mazda-Cosworth.
Proving to be a master in his class Skerlong romped to a class victory in the 30-minute National event last Saturday holding 40 second lead after having lapped everyone up to a fifth. Then on Sunday to back up his effort he achieved an equally dominating performance in the 25 minute Regional event by taking the checkered with a 56 second advantage having lapped the field through to the second place finisher.
Skerlong has also crushed the Portland lap record in a DSR National Class event, obtaining another win for West Race Cars in the factory-backed WR-1000 and with victories and additional race starts at the PIR in the Formula TR Pro Series and Star Mazda Series, the soon-to-be-graduating high school senior already possess an impressive record at the Oregon track.
Skerlong would be heading back to Portland later this week and hopes to maintain not only his successes at the PIR but also the drive that led him to his maiden Champ Car Atlantic podium in April’s third round in Houston where he finished second. Skerlong just can’t wait to get going as the series gears up for the next couple of months.
Skerlong said, “I’m looking forward to getting back into the swing of things. Houston seems like a long time ago but I’m keen to ensure we keep our momentum going having had such a competitive outing there. I love the Portland International Raceway, I regard it as my home track and it felt pretty good to take another couple of wins there last weekend ahead of the Atlantic double-header. It’s good to get back onto a permanent road course after the first three street races. I don’t have to worry about learning the track this time round and hopefully we’ll be on it straight out of the box!”
Round 4 is scheduled to start on Saturday, June 9 at exactly 12:15 pm PST. Round 5 will follow the next day, Sunday, June 10 at 11 am PST. Both races are to be broadcasted on the ESPN2 on Monday, June 18 starting at 5 pm EST.

Gas Powered RC Truck Or Car - 4 Stand Points To Support Your Idea…
Filed Under Needlework | Leave a Comment
Abhishek Agarwal asked:
There are numerous ways to get on with gas-powered RC truck or car. Lots of real like features are available in the remote-controlled tucks and cars. There are various types and styles available in the market. On the choosing part, you should look into many things before you own one.
Radio controlled trucks and cars are deficient in running time and also power. But if you’d like a change, the cars can be converted to gas powered RC trucks or cars, by using nitro methane based fuels. With the help of the fuel, the RC cars get a level of performance or realism, which is disadvantage in normal vehicles powered with battery. Apart from this, the cars are customizable and it’s easy to change the parts of the car and personalize it. You are given choices of transmitters and engines which are available to choose and modify your car the way you want it to be.
To guide on the quest for the perfect gas powered remote controlled car, consider the following factors:
1. Engines: This is the crucial thing in a gas powered RC car; there are a variety of engine types available in the market to choose from. Normally, a lot of the RC cars use an engine type known as ‘glow’ engine. It’s a combustion engine with 2 cycles, which gives power to the remote controlled car making it ready for realism which also gives exhaust while doing it. Instead of the spark plugs used by the automobile engines, for this type of engine, a ‘glow plug’ is used. This plug is heated by a thing called ‘glow starter’. The heat given is stored by ‘glow plug’ and this is used to fire the engine strokes for the remaining power.
2. Fuel: Similar to gasoline powering the automobiles, nitro methane-based fuel powers the RC cars. The mixture of the fuel is mixed with specific lubricants to protect the engine from extra heat produced in the combustion process. The lubricant is similar to the gas-oil that is used in chain saws and other small engine equipments. In order to get the nitro methane fuel into your gas tank of the RC car, a special bottle pump is used. These cars are also are equipped with filters and just like any automobile, it needs to be replaced at proper time intervals.
3. Radio: The RC car is controlled using a radio controller and can be the same as the ones used in RC cars which are electrically powered. The batteries are responsible for the radio controller to work which works on a 2-channel system. More batteries are will be needed for the receiver to work even though there are receivers fed by the motor.
4. Competition or sport: This aspect is most looked at while choosing a body style. Many options are available for you; there are options like trucks, sedans, stock cars, buggies and more popular models of car. These options are available in 2 versions: the competition and sport version. The RC sports cars are less expensive than any car you aim to race with, and of course this needs higher speeds and more power. Oil shocks and ball bearings are a few of the advanced facilities available for competition remote controlled car version.
Looking at the type of car you require, RTR or ready-to-car and RC car kits are available. For the amateurs, RTR kit is what you need to buy because this comes ready for fuel once outside the box. On the other hand, RC car kit needs lots of work but gives you the freedom of putting the pieces together.

Terry Brown asked:
Brembo brings diversity in National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) by delivering a cutting-edge pedal box. The latter is a lightweight, high-stiffness top mounting pedal box which is designed to be interchangeable with most common versions of NASCAR’s.
Brembo, was established in 1961 in Bergamo, Italy, has historically established its strong presence in racing way back in 1975 when Ferrari chooses the expertise of the company for its Formula 1 cars. After Ferrari, some of the big names in the racing industry like Aston Martin, Porsche, Corvette, Maserati made Brembo brake rotors part of their winning formula. These renowned racing names contributed significantly in making Brembo a reliable brand when it comes to race- and championship-winning race cars.
Today, a significant number of open-wheel and stock car racing teams choose Brembo slotted rotors. In fact, numerous Champ Car and IRL cars are using Brembo rotors. Also, the NASCAR Nextel Cup- and Busch Series-winning Chevrolets of Jimmy Johnson and Kevin Harvick; and Frank Kimmel’s ARCA RE/MAX Series-winning Ford feature Brembo.
The braking systems of the world’s leader in braking parts went out of the box. It does not merely concentrate on rotors, calipers and pads. The racing season next year will be highlighted by the introduction of the mentioned Brembo pedal box. The package includes brake and clutch pedals. It will also be featuring Finite Element Method (FEM) analyzed aluminium alloy modular frames from billet. The aluminium throttle pedal comes with adjustable return hook. Also, the end stop is available separately. Brembo accepts a full range of master cylinder diameters up to 1 inch. It also offers a balance bar with a “click” step remote adjuster with a range of plus/minus 10 percent.
The geometry used in Brembo pedal box assures no wasted pedal motion. Additionally, it can be adjusted to 3 fixed positions: 4.3:1, 5.1:1 and 6.0:1. It is also designed to blend with car’s ergonomic design. Brembo panel box ensures its pivots for the clutch and the balance bar. The brake pedals also use straight roller bearings to lessen free play and friction. Aside from that, the firewall sealing uses visa fireproof rubber boots on all cylinders.
