BMW Sauber’s Robert Kubica has amazingly been given the all-clear to race in this weekend’s US Grand Prix in Indianapolis - just two days after his horrific crash in Montreal. The Polish BMW driver discharged himself from hospital on Monday in remarkably good shape and was able to drive himself away.

“As you see I’m quite in good shape and I’m hoping (to be) going to Indianapolis if the doctors will say OK for my driving,” Kubica told reporters outside Montreal’s Sacre-Coeur Hospital. “I feel very good. I was very lucky - big accident, but fortunately, nothing hurt,” he added after walking gingerly down the steps of the hospital. “Mario Theissen and other team members came to visit me and also thanks to Jarno Trulli who came as well.”

“The doctors here have given him the all-clear to race,” said the spokesperson of the Formula One team. Nonetheless, the mandatory ‘black box’ aboard his destroyed single-seat car mirrored a 28G impact at about 90 degrees. In addition, Kubica’s mild concussion means that Sebastian Vettel or Timo Glock could still be called up to take his place.

And “the peak value [of the impact] would be clearly higher than 28G, given the damage to the chassis,” a BMW engineer added. The reliability of BMW oxygen sensor, brakes, and other performance parts has significantly contributed to the unscathed Kubica. Radio-Canada estimated the actual moment of impact at over 40G. “In my day, if you had a crash like that, you would be dead, no doubt about it,” said Niki Lauda. Lauda nearly died in a comparable head-on crash back in 1976.

“I think he wouldn’t have survived something like this ten years ago,” the website www.autosport.com quoted team boss Mario Theissen as saying. The accident highlighted the efficacy of safety measures implemented in the previous years, particularly the head and neck safety device (HANS) and reinforced cockpits.

The Pole will undergo on Thursday a mandatory 25-minute examination by the FIA’s doctors, where his reaction time, coordination and mental capacities will be compared with a ‘control’ test that all drivers go through each season.

The 22-year-old BMW Sauber driver said that he had not yet decided if he wanted to watch replays of the crash. “I saw it when I was in the car,” he said. Kubica said that he remembered “nearly everything” about the crash. The accident occurred when Kubica’s car made contact with the rear wheels of Jarno Trulli’s Toyota on the approach to the hairpin on lap 27 on the Gilles Villeneuve circuit. Kubica’s car took off, flying through the air and slamming into a concrete wall before barrel-rolling across the track. As a result, Kubica’s car was horribly smashed.

Theissen is happy for Kubica to race at Indianapolis this weekend, just seven days after the crash in Canada. He will leave it up to the chief medical officer of Formula One’s governing body FIA to make the decision about Kubica’s fitness to drive in the upcoming race.

Theissen admitted that last Sunday’s race, in which BMW Sauber’s other driver Nick Heidfeld came second behind Lewis Hamilton, had provoked mixed emotions following Kubica’s crash. “Seeing the first impact in the replay gave us all a huge shock. I was waiting on the pit wall watching the screens until the rescue work was completed and then went over to the Medical Centre to see Robert. Having established that he had not suffered any serious injuries, I returned to the team to tell them the good news and followed the remainder of the race from the pit wall,” he added.

I could swear that in the past I have seen a car penalized for leaving with a crew member on the track side of the car when they leave. The reason I am wondering is because Jeff Gordon left his pit box with a crew member on the wrong side of the car at the race he won at Darlington. Am I just confused or is there really a rule?

Great Photoramics

Like many of their panoramic cousins, photoramics are a compilation of images that are used to express a certain theme. Traditional panoramas are generally reflecting a photographic compilation forming a single image. The images that are used to create a photoramic are often photographic but can include others types media such as art drawings, painted backgrounds and other graphic images.

Photoramics that feature sports themes are becoming very popular. Like collectible sports cards, photoramics are quickly becoming popular among collectors of sports memorabilia. Sports have always been a mainstay of American life and there is a great demand for many different types of collectibles and memorabilia.

There are photoramics that profile the athletic achievements of individuals and teams as well as significant moments in sports history. Sports heroes old and new are sometimes portrayed in ways that can profile and highlight an entire career. Team profiles and histories can be found gracing some of the best selling photoramics.

Photoramics of individual athletes often feature photographic images of significant moments of an athletes career. Auto racing has gained a tremendous number of new followers over the last decade. Race fans can find photoramics of their favorite drivers, race teams and cars. Baseball, boxing, football, hockey and more can be found in uniquely designed photoramics.

Imagine a photoramic that features a retrospective of the career of Muhammad Ali. Ali is still one of the most recognizable sports celebrities in the world and all manner of memorabilia pays homage to his incredible career. Entire books and retrospective films have been made showing his life and boxing career.

In a single framed photoramic, fans can stand witness to Ali the Olympic boxer for Team USA, through his world championship years to his Olympic torch presentation in the 1996 Olympics. No other medium can provide such powerful imagery and be small enough to hang in your wall.

Sports teams that have reached the heights of a championship are a favorite subject of photoramic retrospectives. Fans can immediately get a sense of the emotion that comes with a great accomplishment, from the excitement of a Super Bowl game to the World Series of baseball. Photoramics can take sports fans back to a time in history when **** Ruth was the Sultan of Swat and the Steel Curtin Defense of Pittsburg ruled the National Football League.

Baseball fans can revel in the indomitable spirit of heroes like Lou Gehrig, the affable charm New York Yankees manager Yogi Berra, and the swagger of a young Broadway Joe Namath. Through the photoramic, basketball fans can adorn the walls of their home with the power of Michael Jordan, the grace of Magic Johnson and the youthful promise of LeBron James.

Race drivers like the late Dale Earnhardt are immortalized in photoramics, giving race fans the chance to admire and pay homage to this champion of stock car racing for years to come. From living legends like Richard Petty and Al Unser to latter day stars like Jeff Gordon and Jeff Burton can be found as the subjects of a variety of photoramic images.

Like panoramas, photoramics can be found on many quality websites and both can be purchased framed or unframed. Framed photoramics can make the perfect gift for the sports fan in your life and can be appropriate for most any occasion.

Shopping for framed panoramas and photoramics is easier than ever. Online shopping offers consumers a convenient way to find images of your favorite sport or athlete. Many sites offer different framing and matte options that can add to the look of your photoramic.

I have to build a soap box car to race around the campus for my physics class. The conditions are that I have to power it, and it has to have a shell. My class is the first class to do the project so there isn’t much examples or ideas provided. Though it was suggested that we could use petels to power it? So any ideas, and how would I be able to steer it as there will be corners to go around? Plans are welcome too, though I figured that this project will probally be a test as you go type of thing.
Thanks for any help!

Weight is one of the most important issues to consider when building a fast car for road or track. Putting a car on a serious diet is pretty much free horsepower, as any attempt to lighten a car improves the power to weight ratio, this seriously improves acceleration.

The gains on a lightening a car are huge and not just limited to gains in acceleration either. Once you have lightened a fast car you will find the car performs better in the corners and under braking, parts such as brakes and tires will last longer on the car also.

The potential gains are huge but it must be done correctly, you would not want to lighten a rear wheel drive car too much on the rear or you may find traction a problem particularly with a high power output.

The truth is your fast car could be made a great deal faster cheaply and easily just by shaving a few pounds off the body.

How do we remove weight from the fast car?

This bit is as easy as you want it to be, but as with most forms of car modification it depends on how far you want to go. I know a guy who races a BMW and he decided to go all out on weight saving, he even scraped every bit of under-seal from the floors of the car, extreme perhaps but he managed to remove nearly 2 stone of under-seal, not a bad effort.

The obvious place to start saving weight on your fast car is by removing the interior, and anything else that you do not need, the front seats can be replaced with light weight racing items, the unused wiring removed, carpets and sound deadening, pretty much all of the unnecessary parts, my car has just a driver seat and a cage with much of the unnecessary wiring removed. This makes for a car with very impressive performance.

Many other components can be replaced with lighter parts, gear box casings, axle covers etc. It is worth noting that a stainless steel exhaust is lighter than the same in mild steel, so this constitutes a worthwhile investment.

It is also important to reduce the unsprung weight on the car also, by this I mean wheels, brakes and anything else before the suspension mounts, this provides a very good increase in the handling of the car.

What would you build your Soap Box Car out of? And how would you decorate it?

(For those who do not know: A Soap Box car is a “gravity” fueled contraption, made of lightweight materials, used to race downhill with. First to the finish line wins. )

Boots won the last race. Check the results here.
